The Mayor of Akureyri

Ásthildur Sturludóttir is the Mayor of Akureyri since 2018. From 2010-2018 she was the Mayor of Vesturbyggð in the Westfjords of Iceland.

Ásthildur spent her youth in the town of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. She earned her BA Degree in Political Science from the University of Iceland in Reykjavík and a Master of Public Administration degree from PACE University í New York.

Ásthildur is married to Hafþór Jónsson. They have two children.

The Mayor is the town's managing director and is hired by the town council. He is responsible both for implementing the council's decisions and, together with the executive board, for the town's executive and financial management.
