The Arctic Circle crosses Iceland at its northern most point, on the island Grímsey which is a part of the town Akureyri. The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun remains constantly above or below the horizon for 24 hours (at the solstice in June and December).

The birdlife in Grimsey is unique with numerous different species and unusually dense populations. The birdlife is flourishing due to several reasons; rich fishing grounds are close by, no rats or mice are on the island and hunting of the birds and collection of their eggs has been reduced to a minimum since earlier times.

Enjoy a cruise around the island, getting in close range of the bird cliffs and/or enjoy sea-angling. Tours are arranged upon request, varying from 1 hour up to whole day tour.

Grímsey fits well for mountain biking as the landscape is soft, with a mixture of tracks, paths and roads. Tracks cover the east side of the island, while roads are on the west side, paved within the village and gravel outside it.

Due to the good quality of the ocean, visibility and pureness of the waters surrounding Grímsey is a good place to dive in. Divers can enjoy the sea fauna consisting of different Algae/Seaweed, the marine life with many different fish species but most importantly experience the uniqueness of diving with birds

A small (3 hole) golf course is located at the Arctic Circle, close by the airport. Golf Clubs and balls can be rented at the Básar Guesthouse located by the golf course.

Guided walks are offered all year. The tour covers the history of the island, some of the birdlife and way of living in Grímsey and crosses the Arctic Circle. A diploma for crossing the Arctic Circle is included in the tour.

Grímsey is one of the places which provide great view of the midnight sun during the summertime (June-July). This is because Grímsey is the northern most part of Iceland and the Arctic Circle crosses it.
