Despite the island’s northerly latitude, the climate tends to be mild due to the North Atlantic Current, bringing warm water to the coast. The summer is cool and winter mild.

In the table below the average temperature for the years 1995–2012 is displayed. During those years the highest temperature recorded was 22°C (71.6°F) in July 2011, and the coldest temperature -15°C (5°F) 1998.

Grímsey’s longest day is between 20–21.st of June on summer solstice, while the shortest day is  21–22.nd of December.
