Ferry from Dalvík: Sæfari

The ferry Sæfari maintains a year-round schedule between Dalvík and Grímsey. The journey takes approximately 3 hours each way, and the ferry can accommodate up to 106 passengers, along with cars and cargo. During the winter, the ferry operates three to four times a week, while in the summer, it runs five times a week. It's advisable to check the updated schedule on the Road Administration website.

Dalvík is situated about 45 km north of Akureyri and is approximately a 40-minute drive from there.

* June 1 - August 31: Mondays - Wednesdays - Thursdays - Fridays - Sundays
Departure from Dalvík at 9.00 with arrival in Grímsey at 12.00 - the stop in Grímsey varies in length depending on the day. Most days, the stop is 4 or 5 hours with departure from Grímsey at 16.00 or 17.00, arriving in Dalvík at 19.00 or 20.00. On Thursdays, the stop is shorter (2 hours), arriving in Dalvík at 17.00
* May 15-31 & September 1-30: Mondays - Wednesdays - Thursdays - Fridays
Departure from Dalvík at 9.00 with arrival in Grímsey at 12.00 - the stop in Grímsey is 4 hours every day except Thursdays, when it is 2 hours. Departure from Grímsey at 16.00, except Thursdays at 14.00, with arrival in Dalvík at 19.00 or 17.00.
* October 1-January 14: Mondays - Wednesdays - Fridays
Departure from Dalvík at 9.00 with arrival in Grímsey at 12.00. The stop in Grímsey is 2 hours. Departure from Grímsey at 14.00 and arrival in Dalvík at 17.00
* January 15-May 14: Mondays - Wednesdays - Thursdays - Fridays

Booking

Tickets can only be booked online on the website of the Road Administration, see vegagerdin.is, and on board the ferry. It is recommended to book in advance in the summer, as the ferry is often fully booked.

Therefore, we encourage passengers who do not secure a reservation or receive a response regarding transportation to Grímsey to email us at info@vistakureyri.is. Your feedback will help us advocate for improvements with the Road Administration, which operates the ferry.

Transportation to and from the ferry

Bus No. 78 departs from Akureyri every weekday at 08:10, arriving in Dalvík at 08:51 (as per the 2024 schedule, also available at www.straeto.is). The bus stop in Dalvík is located by the local Olís gas station. From there, it's a walk of approximately 650 meters or about a 10-minute walk to the harbor. Occasionally, you can request the driver to stop closer to the dock if it's convenient for the driver, even though it's not on the regular schedule.

Please note that there is a very short time gap between the bus's arrival and the ferry's departure (the ferry departs at 9:00).

When arriving from Grímsey, there is no public transport available. Passengers can arrange a taxi through Dalvík Taxi at phone number +354 8920808 or via email at olivermidlarinn@gmail.com. The 2023 price for the Dalvík to Akureyri route is approximately ISK 15,000, and the car can accommodate up to 8 persons.

There is ample free parking available at the port of Dalvík.
