Kristján Sturluson has collected Wycombe Wanderers football team jerseys for many years and lent us a large part of his collection for the month of August and into September. We encourage you to take a look at the exhibition.
For fun, we compiled which football teams the staff at the Municipal Library support:
- Doddi, Guðrún, Reynir and Sigrún stick with Liverpool, so does Dóra, but mostly because of the Beatles.
- Dagný only follows the girls Þór/KA and the Icelandic women's national team.
- Eydís supports her household members in supporting Manchester United despite not paying much attention herself.
- Ármann housekeeper favours Ipswich Town and Arsenal.
- Aija says she just sticks with the Icelandic national teams.
- Then there are Hólmkell, Hrönn, Hörður, Siggi and Þura, but they don't play with any football team.
Some joke that English football could be considered Iceland's national sport. This interest started in the late 1960s when the Icelandic National Broadcast Station started showing week-old matches from England. One of Kristján's first childhood memories is hearing the legendary jingle "Match of the day" before a football match on TV. In Mogginn's sports section on Tuesdays, the standings of all the leagues in England were published, and then Kristján came across this unusual name, Wycombe Wanderers. He soon became a supporter of the team and has gone to several games with the team and made friends and acquaintances out there. The collection of jerseys spans over 30 years, and indeed the seeing is believing!
