The celebration held annually on November 11th in Grímsey, honors Daniel Willard Fiske (1831–1904), an American librarian and scholar who, despite never visiting the island, made significant contributions to its community. In the 1870s, Fiske became intrigued by the islanders' love for chess and their lifestyle. He donated a chess set to every home, provided books to establish a library, and contributed funds to support the community's future endeavors.
To commemorate his birthday, the islanders host a cake buffet at the community center, fostering a sense of unity and gratitude. Additionally, a monument dedicated to Fiske stands above the harbor in Grímsey, serving as a lasting tribute to his generosity and the enduring bond between him and the islanders.
This event takes place on Daniel Willard Fiske birthday 11th November.
