    The Municipality

    The residents of Grímsey and Akureyri voted by a large majority in the spring of 2009 to merge. Today, both Hrísey and Grímsey are part of the municipality of Akureyri. As of January 1st, 2025, there were 58 registered residents with legal domicile on the island (Statistics Iceland).

    History

    It is believed that Grímsey was not settled at the beginning of Iceland’s habitation. The island was likely considered too remote at the time, while ample land was still available on the mainland.

    Flora & Fauna

    Grímsey is a lush, green island where the ecosystem has been shaped by the maritime climate. The island’s birdlife is both unique and abundant, with numerous species and a high population density. The surrounding ocean is rich in nutrients and teeming with life.

    Tales and Legends

    There are no mountains in Grímsey, and therefore no trolls to be found. However, it is said that there is a large population of elves on the western side of the island. Among the locals, there is also a well-known tale of Bakkakarlinn—a mysterious human-like figure who lies in hiding along the sea banks.

    Weather & Climate

    Despite the island’s northern location, the climate is generally mild due to the North Atlantic Current, which brings warm waters to its shores. Summers are cool and winters are mild.
