The ferry Sæfari operates a scheduled service between Dalvík and Grímsey throughout the year. The journey takes about 3 hours each way, and the ferry has a capacity of 106 passengers.
During the winter months, the ferry runs three to four times a week, while in the summer, it operates five times a week. Always check the updated schedule for Sæfari on the website of the Road Administration.
Dalvík is approximately 45 km north of Akureyri, or about a 40-minute drive.
Schedule:
The ferry schedule is shown at the bottom of the page, with departure times and locations. The journey typically takes about three hours. Passengers are asked to arrive on time before departure. Note that from October 1st to May 14th, the ferry only stops in Grímsey for about 2 hours.
Booking:
Tickets can be booked on the website of the Road Administration here or on board the ferry. It is recommended to book in advance during the summer, as the ferry is often fully booked.
You can choose to travel both ways or just one way, with flights available from Norlandair.

Note that if transporting a vehicle or large freight, passengers are asked to arrive at least one hour before departure.

To ensure good service and availability for passengers traveling to Grímsey, we encourage travelers who are unable to get a seat or do not receive a response about transport to Grímsey to send us an email at info@visitakureyri.is so we can urge improvements from the Road Administration.
Transportation to and from the Ferry:
Bus number 78 travels from Akureyri every weekday at 08:10, arriving in Dalvík at 08:51 (according to the 2025 schedule, also available here). The bus stops at the Olís gas station in Dalvík, from where it is a 10-minute walk (approximately 650 meters) to the harbor (see map). Sometimes, you can ask the driver to stop closer to the dock if needed.
Note that there is very little time between the bus arrival and the ferry departure (the ferry leaves at 09:00)!
There are no public transport services available after arriving from Grímsey. Passengers can book a taxi from Dalvík Taxi at +354 8920808 or via email: olivermidlarinn@gmail.com.
There are free parking spaces available at the harbor in Dalvík for those traveling by car.
